Why the new iPad is a glorified iPod Touch...not even an iPhone 3GS!

Right, so Apple announced the "all new and completely awesome" iPad which is supposed to be somewhere between an iPhone and a Laptop and is supposed to be really good at it!

But here are a few reason why I think that it's nothing but a glorified iPod touch (apart from the fact that it just has a bigger screen and has the same design):

1. It's got no camera of any sort. And I'm not saying it needs to have a camera to take pictures but it should atleast feature a 1.3MP camera for video conferencing.

2. No multitasking. It's using the iPhone OS 3.2 for gods sake!

3. No USB ports. Come on! If it's a tablet atleast put in a USB port!

4. According to initial reports, the keypad isn't too good either.

So all it succeeded in doing is making the iPod touch capable of reading ebooks ... and this isn't innovative at all. Come on Apple! People HAVE heard about the Amazon Kindle!

All in all, Apple is now just bringing out products and holding these events to manipulate their stock prices and to try and keep the Apple fanboys happy ... whom are you kidding Apple? Have you even put some thought into making this thing?!!

  1. Dude why are you so anti apple.. If you cannot appreciate something atleast don't critisize it. Btw ipad is not a new product its a new category of product and like any new innovation you have to be patient with it... And anyways apple isn't forcing anybody to buy! look at this video http://www.apple.com/ipad/ and tell me if it is not more then an iphone. It does so many things a iphone cannot, it has mail, iphoto and iwork in all its glory not like its in the iphone plus it has a book store... watching movies is awesome on this... playing the iphone games is more fun becos of the bigger screen obviously. Plus it is so sleek and beautiful, which I think is an important selling point at the same time its just $499. That is dirt cheap thats £308. Plus its way faster then the iphone and ibook app is also pretty cool.

  2. Yo! Maneck! I'm pro-apple and have used apple since its PowerMac G3s with OS 9, so probably most well versed than most of my friends, and even I agree with you!

    No Multitasking! Thats just ridiculous!

I mean, I was expecting a touch screen with a Mac OS X interface so i can use the same software on it, not to mention visiting flash sites and at least ONE USB port so I could transfer stuff in and out of the tablet or maybe connect a printer and print my work stuff!

Ok, we all know, none of us buy movies to watch from the App store, so Even if we do download, it'll take a helluva time to sort and make it an m4v or an acceptable format for the tablet. Aahhhhh its so frustrating! I can't imagine doing that before a flight! What happened to old school transfer with usb and watching it through VLC?!?!?

You know it'll be better in investing in two new batteries for my laptop for 300 USD and that'll give me 12 hours of battery life! Nope, sorry to say, this isn't for me! My life revolves around mail and excel sheets! Not pretty pictures and movies!

The only thing i'll be missing is the ibooks thing. Coz I like reading when i'm traveling.

Although just for the sheer purpose of owning it i'm inclined to buy it but i don't want to give Apple the satisfaction!

Coz you know they'll be ready with a new iTab by next christmas, one with 128GB hard drives, a faster chip say 1.4Ghz A5 chip, maybe with a webcam, and a few new features! and for the same price! how will people who bought it in April/March look like then>!?! Jackasses!

Also, dude, It'll not retail @ 308 pounds, knowing apple's judgement from previous prices, it'll be 369, 469, and 569 pounds. And i can vouch for that, Same way the Cheapest Macbook in the US is for 1199 USD which should cost 740 GBP, but no, in the UK it retails for 918 GBP, a whopping 178 pounds more! Thats like a free ipod or something! maybe a nice sound system!

Im not going against all Apple products, I love my iphone, so does my mom and dad, and Ruchika loves her 3GS too, and i think Apple TV is fantastic, so is my 21" 3 year old iMac at home and also my new Macbook Pro and Ruchika's Macbook Pro, I love the way they interact with each other and function efficiently like a family.

It's just the iPad which pisses me off, coz Apple thinks we're a bunch of Sheep who'll go run and buy their product just because they think its cool! It has no new functionality which we couldn't do earlier!(Except ibooks)

I found it funny when they kept saying the internet in your hands, it was like watching a re-run of the original iphone!! hahaha!

I mean, what you're going to appreciate the news better on the Itab than the iphone, The news will be the same isn't it?

Oh, apple, please concentrate in pleasing your customers with better service, than making large amounts of money! Which was the initial motive of apple coming out of bankruptcy in 1997-2000, and ever since they were growing, because they made the perfect tools of computing that helped the end user, it wasn't a money-making scam!
Every product was a revolution, and not a cash-cow!

  3. Well said bro, well said! This is one person who truly understands what I'm talking about and what to expect from a tablet - it's not supposed to be an entertainment machine..and even if it is supposed to be one, it doesn't quite succeed at being one. And Aditya I was watching BBC yesterday after the launch of the iPad and although its $499 for the basic version, you have to account for the import duty. They say the cost might be equivalent in pounds, so £499 for the basic one.

Tell me, why would you actually buy one. Give me one thing you cant do with your laptop or your iPhone that you can do with this. I mean are people really going to fall for buying a tablet with a contract and stuff? I'm assuming everyone has a laptop/computer with an internet connection at home and a mobile phone with internet capability. Then why buy this?! If you want to read ebooks buy a Kindle. Just because now Apple have launched ibook everyone cares about reading ebooks and wants to buy an ipad? That's just brainless man.

And trust me, the gaming experience won't be as good as on a computer or your PS3! I still don't understand how they expect us to play games just by tilting the damn screen..its no fun.

And lastly, I might come off as anti-Apple but Apple haven't yet made a product that's blown my mind away. It has started a revolution with touch screen technology but when it came out with the iPhone, it just lacked so many features! A2DP, call forwarding, message forwarding...you know the lot. So it did impress me but these drawbacks also caused me not to buy 1.

And I got the right to criticise things, why shouldn't I. It's from public opinion that Apple will now go out and release a newer version of the iTab at the end of the year :P

  4. I agree with all of this. All I am saying is Apple has taken the initiative of bringing out a proper quality product for the gap in the market between the phone and the laptop, that is more then what any other company has done.

I agree there are a lot of features missing, like they were missing in the iPhone when it first came out. But it is this first step, in addressing this market gap which is important. Features can be added with constant updates and refreshes. Coming out with a new product is risky stuff, let alone a new category. And Apple has addressed this issue time and again taking this risk and raising the standard of the industry.

You see these Android phones, and HTC phones, etc. which are very similar to the iPhone. But none of these companies took the risk of actually coming out with the new groundbreaking phone, it is Apple which did that and the rest of them just juiced on their success. What Apple did for the music industry for the iPod was similar and you cannot deny them that, they found a gap in the market, they came up with a groundbreaking product and launched it, while others followed.

Apple is never big on putting features that are already popular in the market, so if you expected Apple to come out with a phone and have all the old school features, and if you are still expecting something similar from Apple you will never be happy. What they have achieved is bigger then that. Bringing a phone that lacks most of the basic phone features and still out selling its competitors. If you look back at the history of phones years from now, its not Androids, or HTC's or Nexus1 but its the iPhone that will be looked back on as one of the few phones that actually raised the standard of the market on its introduction. No one can deny that.

Coming back to the iPad, I agree its missing a few crucial features like the camera, multi-tasking, flash, the USB, HDMI, and the resolution should have been better then 4:3. But these features are just a few updates away, what Apple has done bravely here, is address the lack of products in the market, particularly in this sector and now you will see other big companies will follow. But you cannot deny them that every feature in this device is absolute quality. From iBook, iTunes, iWork, Youtube, etc. You asked me what is better in the iPad than the iPhone, well all of the above I mentioned. Now compare it to a laptop. Well firstly it wouldn't be fair to the iPad to compare it to a laptop, which has been evolving for what two whole decades now. But still its cheaper, more compact, whatever the iPad does it does efficiently and the only way I see it going is ahead. Its real competitor is the net-book, every feature that iPad has is better then the similar feature in the net-book. And you cannot even compare the quality. As to Sameer mentioning that we do not actually buy movies or music from the store, that being true for us, Apple cannot consider "What will make this device better for people who download illegally from the internet?" and for people who actually buy movies from the store or who already have they just have to sync it with their Macs or PC's and watch. Or buy it directly on the iPad. Its pretty simple stuff. Apple has set the benchmark in this category, they are going to improve on this and you will see a lot of updates and cool stuff in the near future.
